Lenten Book Club Starts next Sunday!
by St. Sebastian Web Admin, February 14, 2010
Next Sunday after service, we will begin with a simple supper (bring a snack to share or money for pizza), and will discuss the first chapter of Sara Miles book Take This Bread: A Radical Conversion. Sara, the author, described herself as ”a blue-state, secular intellectual… a left-wing journalist with a habit of skepticism” who spent time working with progressive movements across the globe. Returning to live in San Francisco in the ’90s, she came out of the closet, had a daughter, found a life partner, and, having never attended church in her life, experienced a profound experience of conversion upon first taking communion. She now directs the food program at St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church in San Francisco. The book explores the relationship between communion, Christ, food, and service, and is a good launching point our Lenten exploration of what it means to be a community centered on the Eucharist.
The book is available at local bookstores, or in an ebook version. You can read excerpts here.
